Building a team: how to select partners!
Dr. Boyce Watkins posted this today and I thought you all might benefit from his reflections. His email is listed below. Let me know what you think about what he says here!
"Today, I was thinking about one of the most frustrating things about starting a business: Having a lazy partner. In the church, the term "equally yolked" is often used to remind us that those who are of the church should find a partner who matches their commitment. Well, the same is true when starting a business. Working with a partner who doesn't actually want to do much of the work can be one of the most frustrating experiences known to man. But, because you were too quick to give this person a percentage of your business, you're stuck with them, like that absentee co-parent who shows up at your child's graduation 18 years later to take all of the credit for their success. So, given that many of you are seriously thinking about one day running your own company, I encourage you to choose your partners carefully. Vet them out. Don't give ANYONE a percentage of your business until you know FOR SURE that they are bringing something to the table and will deliver it consistently. That's my black business tip of the day, and it will save you thousands of dollars in headaches over time, I assure you." I'm still flying solo at my business and have yet to find anyone I'd want to partner with. I'm looking forward to meeting the people I'll be able to learn and grow with and know that it will be amazing when this happens.Â
